Following 40 years in residence at Australia Square, Lend Lease Corporation moved to new headquarters in The Rocks in 2004. Through a design competition TCA was appointed to this challenging project, which required a 60-place child care centre to be designed across the entire ground floor level below the new office building.

The plan is generated from the paradigm of a small community, with intimately scaled and detailed home-bases wrapped around small outdoor “piazzas” designed to provide a sense of being open and connected to the sky above.

The façade to the street was conceived as a composition of over-scaled building blocks that could be inhabited and used by the children in various active and passive ways. Textured and coloured glazing and materials adds a sense of fun and intricacy to the façade, for the enjoyment of both the occupants and passing pedestrians on the footpath.
