Wonderfully staged and you may smartly dialogued, it’ll have no higher issue for the way of living down its extremely unattractive identity.” [ 8 ]

Monthly Film Bulletin told you “The film moves during the an easy pace, the dialogue is actually advanced and you may characterisations basically active. Richard Brody throughout the The fresh new Yorker noted “So it terse and taut motion picture noir try centered on the latest romantic and you can professional problems of one’s label profile, the newest unlawful mastermind (starred of the Penis Powell) trailing a chic illegal casino. The fresh new film’s writer and manager, Robert Rossen, sets up a good multidimensional chess online game, having mortal limits, ranging from Johnny, his employer (Thomas Gomez), their boss’s wife (Ellen Received), an effective cagey cops inspector (Lee J. Cobb), and you may a scuffling actress (Evelyn Keyes) whose cousin (Nina Foch) did at the local casino and you can old good corrupt investigator (Jim Bannon). The fresh new caustically epigrammatic software, the latest cast’s suavely managed body language from love and threat, and you may Rossen’s thrillingly restrained and you will stylishly cocky photographs (and additionally his governmental conscience) make this pugnacious but really detailed spectacle a low profile antique of the category.” [ 10 ]

Pic has actions and you can suspense, and you will certain brief meets out-of jokes to provide style. Ace performances of the Dick Powell, as a playing domestic overseer, and you may Lee J. Cobb, while the an authorities inspector, and in the score . While the plot observe a familiar trend, the newest characterizations are fresh plus the performances good enough in order to overbalance. Dialogue is actually terse and you can topical, steering clear of the sentimental, phoney contact. Uncommon digital camera bases arrive once in a while so you’re able to heighten focus and you will temporarily stop the eye. Good teamplay from the Robert Rossen, increasing while the director-scripter, and Milton Holmes, brand new publisher and member manufacturer, in addition to aids in making this a mellow creation.” [ 11 ]

It is mostly a matter of viewing Mr. Powell proceed through their paces fashionably while you are a large throw away from stars and you will actresses provide him classic service. Evelyn Keyes plays the nice nothing woman who brings about brand new finest in him and you can Ellen Received is the sleek and slinky vixen just who becomes your into jams. Thomas Gomez try oily just like the villain and Lee J. Cobb do a different sort of able concert tour as a weary cops inspector who eventually closes the truth. A lot of ingesting and you may smoking is carried out from the all worried.” [ a dozen ]
