Location: Circular Quay, Sydney
This project developed from a prize-winning entry submitted to an international design competition sponsored by the NSW State Government in 1994. In the 1960’s a large elevated freeway was constructed over Circular Quay that effectively separated the CBD from Sydney Harbour. This project adopted a creative funding strategy that provided for removal of the freeway and complete upgrading of the public realm, at no cost to the Government. This was achieved through the construction of low scale commercial buildings at strategic locations across the site. Sydney City Council commissioned further studies to develop these ideas.
