A renovation of a modest existing 19th century cottage that required demolition of a series of later rear additions and the re-structuring of the plan around a small centralised courtyard. The compact primary living spaces open directly onto the courtyard, creating a sense of spaciousness that belies the modest size of the dwelling and its rooms. A small plunge pool is a key visual and environmental element, adding life and cooling to the enclosed outdoor space. The side wall of the court is formed by a neighbouring party wall. Zero lot line planning enabled the open space of this small building allotment to be consolidated into one centralised and useable outdoor space.
