Location: Rose Bay, NSW
Date Completed: 2005
TCA was approached by the owners of an existing Harry Seidler-designed dwelling dating from the 1970’s, to design develop and complete a development approval undertaken by the Seidler office.
The project was completed in collaboration with Mr Seidler, and is his last residential project prior to his death in 2006. A change in zoning had changed the character of the neighbourhood since the original split-level modernist dwelling was completed, with three storey apartment buildings now surrounding it.
The owners had decided to add an additional full level above the existing dwelling to create a duplex style development. Having enjoyed living in the house for over twenty years, they approached Mr Seidler who agreed to prepare a concept that preserved the original design intent.
A discreet new access element was devised to the side of the dwelling to provide private access to the new upper level apartment.
The original dwelling was renovated at the same time with careful preservation of its important detail and features. Bathrooms and kitchens were brought to contemporary standards with new fittings and finishes.
The office was delighted to have undertaken this collaboration with Harry Seidler in the late stages of his highly distinguished career.
Mr Seidler visited the completed work and to our considerable pleasure, expressed his gratitude and delight in the outcome.
