An extension to a large California style bungalow on a steep site with limited solar access. The client required a seamless connection to a controlled outdoor garden space for supervision of their young children.
A two-storey, lightweight pavilion was attached to the rear of the dwelling. A new family space and kitchen was devised below upper level bedrooms contained within a floating box with carefully placed window piercings designed to control privacy within its close residential context. The family space below has two glass walls that open to fully engage with the larger space of the courtyard.
